Okay Andy... It's not coming from the engine itself. If your DPF was playing up, I think you would be getting a warning light on the dash, just as long as it hasn't been disabled by the previous owner....

The oil level is due to to many failed regeneration on the DPF. Not all cars were fitted with a warning light to tell you the DPF was regening. The early cars were but they changed in around 2006/7....
