I would agree with marks152 that It's a sticky solenoid. When you turn your key to start the car, you only operate a low current circuit that operates the starter solenoid. Its the solenoid itself which helps to engage the pinion with the flywheel gear ring and close two thumping great high current electric contacts which make the starter motor turn. These high current contacts can get very pitted over time and not want to make contact. Undo the solinoid body from the motor to find the main contacts at the end of the solenoid armature. Gently clean the surface of these big contacts with a very small fine file to restore the level surface. This should do the trick
