Technical : ecu compatability

Hi I have an 03 plate 1.8 z18xe engine dualfuel zafira

I have all the usual ecu symptoms

Now I need to know does a replacement / secondhand ecu have to match all serial numbers etc exactly

I say this as there are many ecu's listed for the z18xe engine

before I shell out for a repair and rebuild will others work if I get them with the transponder and key chip

Do they simply have to be from the same engine and year

Any advise would be greatly appreciated
