We're just shy of 35,000 miles on the clock, so not too bad on that front. Suspected the ticking was the solenoid - it sounds pretty much exactly as you say!
I'll have a nosy at the engine bay box, but when I was in there checking the fuses it all looked dry and clean. I'll have a proper look in the daylight though. Also tried the steering test but it seems to be OK. Will try it again tomorrow after we see how the car starts (or not!) in the morning.
Battery is reading fine - around 13.5v. I'll have a look to see if there's anything draining it tomorrow now that I've laid my hands on a meter.
I suspect this might take a bit of time to track down and sort, but I'd rather do it myself with any suggestions you have than through the garage at £40-50ph!
