I think you need to get the fault codes read from the gearbox ECU, Engine ECU and Power steering ECU and hopefully that will give you a bit more information. It might be a dodgey alternator dropping out now and then. This will stop the steering from working until the correct voltage returns. It might also be the reason for the gearbox issue too.
